Environmental campaigners have welcomed news that the Welsh Government sought legal opinion on whether it has powers to impose a moratorium on fracking.

First Minister Carwyn Jones confirmed, in a letter to Friends of the Earth Cymru, that Welsh Government officials sought advice on whether Wales is able to make such a move.

Friends of the Earth called for Mr Jones to publish the advice and act on it.

But Welsh Government officials said legal advice is frequently sought in conducting government business, and it would be misleading to read a particular policy intention into the move.
