All Africa: Tanzania: Gas Must Be Used to Consolidate Prevailing Economic Activities

THE Chief Secretary, Ambassador Ombeni Sefue, recently led a delegation of Permanent Secretaries on a visit to Lindi and Mtwara regions to inspect various development projects.

Following huge discoveries of natural gas on-shore and off shore reserves in the area, Tanzania is now among Africa's leading producers of the commodity.

Industry sources say that within the next two years, natural gas reserves might rise from 46 million trilion cubic feet (tcf) to 200 million tcf.

Tanzania has already started counting benefits of the gas economy, which will soon be magnified after completion of the 538-km natural gas pipeline from Mtwara to Dar es Salaam now under construction. There are other related giant projects including the Dangote Cement factory and a major petrochemical industry.  MORE
