Standart News: South Stream: 24 billion reasons why the American oil lobby would want to stop it

''The US is trying to disrupt Russia's gas pipeline project, South Stream, because it wants to supply gas to Europe itself'', President Vladimir Putin stated this week. " They do everything to disrupt this contract...They talk of Europe being too dependent on Russian gas. We believe that our partner is entitled, can and must create for itself the most favorable conditions, have contacts and contracts with many partners, which is what we have been doing too: recently, we signed a contract with the People's Republic of China and will continue to advance our commodity further in the emerging markets," the Russian leader said. As such, by stopping the project, the EU is scoring its biggest own goal ever - and risks to lose out against China and the US in the energy fight about the new status quo.

Taking a closer look, the American pressure is simple Mathematics: Once the South Stream reaches its full capacity of 63 billion cubic meters, it will generate an USD 23.94 billion income for Russia's Gazprom as calculated with current prices. As such, the US has 23.94 billion very good reasons to do everything in its power to stop the project, especially if oil lobbyists in Washington believe that part of this money could also land in their pockets.
