NRCU: Shale gas not dangerous for environment if extraction technologies observed, US ambassador says

If all technologies in the development and production of unconventional gas are observed, this work is not dangerous for environment, which is now discussed by the opponents of the project in Ukraine, U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine John Tefft has said.

"I've always been a supporter of environmental protection. And I am convinced: if shale gas is extracted in an appropriate manner, this can be done without harming the environment," Tefft said at a meeting with chairman of Donetsk Regional State Administration Andriy Shyshatsky in Donetsk, eastern Ukraine. At the same time, the ambassador said that environmentalists who are now raising the question of shale gas extraction in Ukraine have every legitimate reason for talking about pros and cons of the project. Tefft expressed opinion that shale gas production can significantly improve the economic situation in Ukraine and consequentially the welfare of its citizens, especially through improving the competitiveness of domestic enterprises on the world market via reducing the energy component in the cost of produce.  MORE
