ABC: Santos doesn't see Europe as a major new market for gas despite EU looking to wean off Russian gas supplies

A major oil and gas company says it's unlikely that that the European Union would become a major market for Australian liquefied natural gas (LNG).

However Santos vice president Peter Cleary does see opportunities for some spot sales to the EU into the future. After recent political turmoil, the Europe Commission is looking to reduce its dependence on piped Russian gas.

It's been reported that the director general of the European Commission's Director-General for energy, Dominique Ristori, says Australia's 'political and economic stability and open markets would make it a welcome source of gas for Europe'.

Peter Cleary says the economics of exporting LNG to Europe compared to our traditional markets of Japan, Korea and China just don't add up.
