Daily Trust: Nigeria: Power: Gas shortage may prolong outage in 2015

With the bottleneck of gas-to-power and poor consumer services constraints ushering in the New Year, stakeholders are expected to tackle this menace for once or retell the same story they told in the year past.

The current generation statistics as published by the Federal Ministry of Power for last Wednesday was 3,275megawatts (mw) at its peak. The actual energy sent for consumption remains 2,987mw, a drastic reduction from the 4,100mw recorded on December 29, 2015.

The chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Dr. Sam Amadi, in a recent interview, said the solution to the recurrent problems of gas shortage which has many blames of vandalism, was the reviewed price for domestic gas supply which will become earnest this year.
He said gas supply to the thermal plants used to be on Best Endeavour with competitors in other sectors but that the reviewed price of $3.30/ Million British Thermal unit (MMBTu) will help to increase the flow of gas to power stations for increased generation capacity.
