Politics.hu: Foreign minister says no delay reported in Slovak-Hungarian gas interconnector

Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on Tuesday that, to the best of his knowledge, there is no delay in preparations for opening the Hungarian-Slovak gas interconnector.

As soon as the pipeline starts commercial operation, Hungary will once again have the opportunity to supply natural gas to Ukraine from non-Russian sources, he added. Hungary used to supply the largest volume of gas to Ukraine but the government must also take care of refilling Hungarian storage facilities, the minister added.

“We obviously express solidarity with Ukraine and will help as much as we can but we also bear responsibility for the Hungarian people and the Hungarian economy,” he said.

There is no comprehensive energy security in eastern-central Europe as long as there is no north-south link between the member states, he said adding that Hungary had done its share and built interconnectors towards Slovakia and Croatia.
