Thai Egat to Receive 2nd Petronas Spot Cargo

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) will receive the second of the two LNG cargoes from Malaysia’s Petronas LNG on April 21, it said April 17 in a statement.

The state-run utility will receive 65,000 metric tons of LNG at the Map Ta Phut import terminal. The first cargo arrived in December last year. In November 2019, Egat selected Malaysian Petronas to supply two cargoes of LNG of 65,000mt each.

Egas said it will use the regasified LNG to fuel the newly-built Unit 1 of the South Bangkok power plant in Samut Prakarn province, in addition to Unit 5 of Bangpakong power plant in Chachoengsao province, and Unit 4 at Wang Noi plant, Ayutthya province.

The utility said it is reviewing its spot LNG procurement plans due to market uncertainty created by the Covid-19 outbreak.

“Due to the Covid-19 outbreak, Egat is reviewing a medium-term LNG procurement plan for 2020-2022 which was passed by Egat board in January,” said Ranee Kositvanich, an assistant governor at Egat.
