Japanese LNG imports up 2% in June

Japanese LNG imports in June were 5.8mn metric tons, up 1.7% year/year, according to the provisional data published by the country’s finance ministry on July 21. The imports were unchanged month/month.

Japan’s shipments last month cost 586bn yen ($4.25bn), up 99% yr/yr. In the first half of the year, Japan imported 37.54mn mt of LNG, down 3.5% yr/yr.

China last year overtook Japan as the world's largest LNG importer. In 2021, Chinese LNG imports were 78.93mn mt, up 18.3% yr/yr. However, this year Japan has regained the top spot as Chinese imports in the first half have been 31.26mn mt, down 20% yr/yr.
