Queensland awards new oil, gas exploration licences

Queensland government on June 3 awarded licences for six oil and gas exploration areas in the Bowen, Surat and Millungera basins.

Four areas have been awarded under the PLR2021-1 located in the Bowen and Surat basins and two areas under the PLR2019-2 located in the Millungera basin. Santos, North Queensland Energy and AusGasCo have been awarded two areas each.

One of the two areas awarded to AusGasCo is subject to the Australian market supply condition, which requires the holder of the tenure to supply gas produced under the tenure to the Australian market.

“The preferred tenderers must now meet any environmental, native title and other approval requirements before the authorities to prospect can be considered for grant under the Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Act 2004,” the state government said.
