Mongolia approves Gurvantes CBM project EIA

Australia’s Talon Energy and Telmen Resource, its partner in the Gurvantes XXXV coalbed methane (CBM) project in Mongolia, have received government approval for the project’s environmental impact assessment (EIA), Talon said on February 3.

As a result of the EIA approval, Telmen will mobilise to site within the coming weeks to complete final site preparations, with the maiden Gurvantes XXXV drilling programme is expected to start in late February - early March.

The drilling programme will include the completion of four fully tested cored holes within the western portion of the Gurvantes XXXV project area.

“The drilling is the first step in the process of upgrading the independently certified 5.96 trillion ft3 gross prospective resource to contingent resources,” Talon said. “This will be a major milestone in the potential establishment of a world-class gas project adjacent to one of the world’s most important gas markets, in China.”

The project covers an area of 8,400 km2 and is situated around 20 km from the Chinese-Mongolian border and close to the northern China gas transmission and distribution network.

The exploration programme is majority funded via a farmout agreement between Telmen and Talon. The agreement requires Talon to spend $4.65mn to earn a 33% working interest in the production sharing contract. Telmen will remain as the operator under the terms of the farmout agreement.

Sydney-listed Tamaska Oil and Gas signed an agreement in December to acquire Telmen.
