Mangalore Refinery pens gas deal with BPCL in India

Indian state-run refinery Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals (MRPL) has inked a five-year agreement with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) to buy regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG), it said on February 3.

Under the terms of the agreement, BPCL will provide MRPL's refinery and petrochemical facility in Mangalore with a daily supply of 0.43mn m3 of RLNG. The RLNG will be sourced from the terminal in Cochin, marking a collaboration between two state-owned entities.

“Gas plays a significant role in refining crude oil, reducing feed costs, optimizing fuel, and lowering overall emissions from the refinery,” MRPL said. “MRPL intends to utilise RLNG as feed for the production of hydrogen and fuel for gas turbines to generate power, steam, and various furnaces. Using natural gas in the refinery helps reduce both the emissions and carbon footprint of the refinery.”

The refinery will replace naphtha, diesel and fuel oil with RLNG. These surplus products will be available in the market, post upgradation, in refinery process units.
