Italian PM Confirms Calenda as Economy Minister

Italy's new economic development minister Carlo Calenda has been confirmed in his role under the newly formed government led by Paolo Gentiloni.

Calenda had previously been in charge of international trade under the Letta government since May 2013. In February 2014 he was confirmed in that role by then prime minister Matteo Renzi, who later appointed him minister of economic development in May 2016 following the resignation of Federica Guidi over conflict of interest allegations. Beside his political career, Calenda was CEO of Interporto Campano, and assistant to the president of Confidustria (the Italian industry association) between 2004 and 2008.

Before joining Confindustria, he was responsible for product marketing and programming for Sky Italia. He also served at Ferrari where he was responsible for relationships with financial institutions and customers.

Energy policy falls under Italy's economic development ministry.

Gentiloni government sworn in

The new cabinet headed by Italy's new prime minister Paolo Gentiloni was sworn late December 12 by Italian president Sergio Mattarella.

This new government, the 64th in the history of the Italian Republic, was appointed after former prime minister Matteo Renzi stepped down, following his defeat at the constitutional referendum that was held on December 4. Gentiloni had served under Renzi, most recently as foreign minister since October 2014.

Gentiloni's cabinet appears to have been formed under the sign of continuity with the the previous one, with as many as 12 ministers out of 18 being confirmed in their role. The senate approved Gentiloni December 14.
