European TSOs agree on power trade with Ukraine

Continental European power transmission system operators (TSOs) have agreed on the launch of electricity trade with Ukraine once key conditions are met, the European Network of Transmission System Operators (ENTSO-E) reported on June 8.

The move follows the emergency synchronisation of the power grids of Ukraine and Moldova with the continental European system in mid-March. Ukraine's TSO Ukrenergo will now work with its European counterparts to implement conditions to allow power trade. Ukrenergo has also been made an observer member of ENTSO-E.

"The process will be gradual and done under clear conditions agreed with our Ukrainian partners, so that the energy security for the region will be ensured," EU energy commissioner Kadri Simson said in a statement. "This is another tangible sign of our solidarity with Ukraine and a further important step in the longer term perspective towards achieving full synchronisation, market reforms, and market integration between the EU and Ukraine."
