Eni, KMG ink deal for hybrid renewables-gas power project in Kazakhstan

Italian energy company Eni and Kazakhstan's state-owned KazMunayGas (KMG) have formalised an agreement for a 250 MW hybrid renewables-gas project in Zhanaozen City, Mangystau Region, Kazakhstan, Eni said on January 18.

The signing ceremony, attended by Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi and KMG chairman of the board Magzum Mirzagaliyev, took place in Rome during the official visit of the president of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, to Italy.

The project aims to provide KMG facilities in the region with a sustainable and reliable source of low-carbon electricity generated from solar and wind energy. The energy mix will be further enhanced with additional capacity from a gas power plant, ensuring a balanced and resilient power supply.

In addition to the renewables-gas project, Eni signed a memorandum of cooperation with the sovereign wealth fund Samruk-Kazyna (SK). This collaboration encompasses various energy transition projects, including the potential replication of the hybrid renewables model in different regions of Kazakhstan. The partners will also explore mineral initiatives and work on the development of technologies to reduce carbon emissions.

Eni further expanded its strategic partnerships by signing a cooperation agreement with the national gas company of Kazakhstan, QazaqGaz. This collaboration is focused on the exchange of expertise among scientific, technical, and research centers. The goal is to foster technological innovations and human capital development, ultimately contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions in the gas industry's operations.
