ClassNK Approves Design for New LNG Bunkering Vessel

Japanese classification society ClassNK has issued an in-principle approval for a 7,500 m³ LNG bunkering vessel designed by South Korean Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction, ClassNK said October 20.  

This design is the result of joint research carried out by Hanjin and ClassNK to improve the efficiency of LNG bunkering vessels. LNG is growing in popularity as choice of fuel but vessels have to rely on fixed bunker locations, potentially limiting their operations. Keeping in mind the greater flexibility that LNG bunker vessels could provide through ship-to-ship bunkering, the two parties worked together to improve the viability of this technology, ClassNk added.

The new design employs type-C bi-lobe tanks, which according to ClassNk, improves on cargo capacity to allow for greater efficiency and productivity. The designs comply with ClassNK rules and guidance for survey and construction of steel ships.
