Chevron to commence search for Polish shale gas in Autumn

Chevron expects to commence its exploration activities for shale gas in the Lublin region of Poland this autumn.

Chevron's representatives met recently with the Governor of Lublin province and local authorities.

Speaking on behalf of Chevron, John Claussen said that the company is preparing a detailed program of research.  Seismic data gathering is planned for this autumn, with the first exploration wells to be drilled a year later.

Chevron is planning a four year period of research and exploration. Initial activity will be be conducted in the vicinity of Grabowiec.

Claussen did not reveal the amount of the planned expenditures, nor did he comment of the size of the targets . "We're optimistic," - he stressed.

Local government authorities have welcomed exploration for shale gas in their area. "We need to develop. We hope that the discovery of gas will bring investment in infrastructure and generating employment, and the environment will not suffer very much" – they commented.

Claussen assured officials that Chevron would use modern methods considerate of the environment.

The Polish Ministery for the Environment has granted 15 licenses to six companies to prospect for unconventional natural gas deposits in the Lublin region, to date.
