Woodside May Build Three FLNG Plants for Browse

Woodside Petroleum may build three floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) plants for its Browse project in Australia , according to news agency Reuters.

The company scrapped the earlier onshore plan and opted for cheaper FLNG plants. Last month, Woodside formally selected the use of floating LNG (FLNG) technology as the development concept to commercialise the three Browse gas fields.

“This concept would involve using Shell’s FLNG technology and Woodside’s offshore development expertise for the Browse LNG Development,” the company had said in a statement.

Besides high costs, Woodside also faced opposition from the Western Australian government which had proposed establishing a gas export hub at James Price Point, with Browse LNG as the cornerstone project, Reuters said.

Woodside’s Chief Executive Peter Coleman told Reuters in an interview that more than 95 percent of the gas resources are held by Australia's federal government, which has backed the move to develop floating LNG.
