Wood to Upgrade Norwegian Gas Plant

Norway's Equinor has handed an Nkr 400 ($42)mn engineering, procurement, construction and installation contract to Wood for upgrades at the Kollsnes gas processing plant (GPP), operator Gassco said September 17. Equinor is the technical services provider.

Wood will upgrade the facility's mono-ethylene glycol (MEG) regeneration handling capacity which will prevent hydrate formation and corrosion in the pipelines. It will install an extra MEG train, a chiller package and a MEG export pump.

The Kollsnes GPP is west of Bergen and handles gas from the Troll, Kvitebjorn, Visund and Fram fields. It has a capacity of 144.5mn m3/day, with around 40% of Norwegian gas exports passing through the facility.

Gassco said that Kollsnes is an important plant in the gas value chain, and the project will contribute to maintain high gas volumes and regularity at the plant in a long-term perspective. "This project will strengthen the security of supply to Europe, as well as give positive ripple effects to the region," said CEO Frode Leversund, CEO in Gassco. The contract work will start up in September 2020 with installation and completion at Kollsnes during 2022/23.

Management and engineering will be performed by Wood, whilst the fabrication and construction work is subcontracted to Kværner and will take place at the Stord yard. Kværner will also perform the installation work at Kollsnes, Gassco said.

Wood said that delivering the MEG upgrade at the Kollsnes GPP allowed it to "leverage its market-leading expertise in downstream processing to support Equinor’s technical operations of this critical piece of onshore energy infrastructure, through which 40% of all Norwegian gas export flows.”
