Australian operator Western Gas has executed the formal contract with Valaris for the MS-1 semi-submersible rig to drill the Sasanof-1 exploration well offshore Western Australia, it said on November 25.

Sasanof-1 will be a vertical well and drilled to a total depth of approximately 2500 m in 1070 m of water. Drilling costs are estimated at $20-25mn, Western Gas said. The exploration well is targeting a 2U prospective resource of 7.2 trillion ft3 gas and 176mn barrels condensate. The Sasanof prospect is on-trend and updip of Mentorc gas and condensate field and is near the giant Scarborough and Jansz-Io fields.

Meanwhile, Western Gas has signed an agreement under which fellow Australian operator Global Oil and Gas will provide 50% of the well funding to earn a 25% interest in the permit.
