Wartsila to Build Small-Scale LNG Plant in Germany

Finland's Wartsila has won a contract to build a CO2-neutral LNG plant in Cologne, Germany, that will supply fuel for transportation, it said on October 8.

The plant will receive gas from the national grid and will feature gas treatment and liquefaction units, storage tanks and truck filling stations, Wartsila said. It is due online by autumn 2022 and will produce 100,000 metric tons/year of LNG.

"The use of LNG as an emissions-reducing fuel in the marine and transportation industries is already well established, and to introduce bioLNG which can be mixed with LNG is the next obvious step in enabling a CO2-neutral transportation fuel," Wartsila's vice president for gas solutions, Antti Kuokkanen, said in a statement.

Green gas certificates are issued when biomethane is injected into the grid. Companies can then acquire the permits when they are receiving gas from the grid, making their supplies carbon neutral. Wartsila did not disclose the customer of the plant order, although several companies are in the LNG refuelling business, such as Uniper.
