Uzbekistan Starts up Chemicals Plant

Uzbekistan commissioned the $4bn Ustyurt gas chemical complex on May 21.

South Korea's prime minister, Hwang Kyo-ahn, and his Uzbek counterpart, Shavkat Mirziyaev, participated in the inauguration ceremony of this complex which consists of five plants: gas separation plant, ethylene, polyethylene and polypropylene production plants; and a power-generation plant.

Korean companies Korea Gas Corporation (Kogas), Lotte and STX Energy participated in the development of the project.

Uzbek and South Korean companies invested $1.4bn, while $2.5bn came from financial institutions.

Ustyurt Gas Chemical Complex is designed to process 4.5bn m³/yr of raw gas to produce 4bn m³/yr of marketable gas as well as 400,000 metric tons (mt) of polyethylene, 100,000 mt of polypropylene, as well as 100,000 mt of pyrolized petroleum.
