Uniper unit to provide German logistics firm with bio-LNG

German LNG infrastructure operator Liqvis, a unit of German group Uniper, has agreed to provide sustainably-produced bio-LNG at the site in Hamm, Germany, of one of its customers, logistics firm LIT.

Under a project that ran between mid-May and the end of June, LIT's IVECO S-WAY trucks ran exclusively on the bio-LNG supplied from Liqvis' mobile LNG filling station, the latter company said on July 8. The results demonstrate that it is already possible to make heavy-duty road transport nearly carbon neutral, it said.

Vehicle manufacturer IVECO also took part in the project directly, using a telematics system to record the trucks' performance data including fuel consumption, power and driving style analysis.

The bio-LNG was derived from food waste and was certified according to International Sustainability and Carbon Certification EU standards. Compared to conventional diesel, the bio-LNG produced 96% less greenhouse gas emissions.

"LNG trucks have been travelling on European roads using conventional liquefied natural gas for several years now, which has significantly reduced emissions," Liqvis' managing director Sebastian Groblinghoff commented. "By using sustainably produced BIO- LNG, even today transport operations using heavy duty trucks can be almost climate neutral."
