Uniper to supply bio-LNG for transport

Uniper's transport-fuel LNG subsidiary Liqvis is to start buying carbon-neutral bio-LNG from EnviTec Biogas from Q3 2022, the Fortum-owned German company said May 27. The bio-LNG will be produced at the biogas plant in Gustrow which so far has been used to make biomethane. 

Liqvis said the contract was "a major milestone" on the way to decarbonising its portfolio. Its partnership will mean it can "offer a fully carbon-neutral product at an attractive price for the very first time. As supplies of bio-LNG have been limited in the past, it’s likely that we will not be able to meet customer demand in full initially."

EnviTec said the implementation of RED II in Germany "is the first truly ambitious approach to the energy transition in the transport sector." The European Union directive raises the overall EU target for renewable energy consumption to 32% by 2030.

Conversion work on the Gustrow site requires investment in a CO2 liquefaction plant and an LNG system for biomethane liquefaction, as well as extensive capital spending on replacements amounting to €35-40mn ($43-49mn).”

Liqvis, set up in 2017, is planning an expansion of its German LNG filling station infrastructure over the next few years.

With their low figures for fine particulates and nitrogen oxide, LNG vehicles already easily meet the stringent environmental requirements of the Euro 6 emissions standard. Fuel costs for trucks weighing over 18 metric tons with an annual mileage of at least 100,000 km are also significantly lower than for diesel vehicles and are exempt from motorway tolls in Germany.
