Uniper CEO to Give Business a Lift

German utility Uniper has appointed Andreas Schierenbeck as CEO and Sascha Bibert as CFO, it said May 2, in an unanimous vote. They take up their positions June 1, and near the top of the agenda will be talks on closer co-operation with Finnish Fortum.

They replace Klaus Schafer and Christopher Delbruck, respectively, who will step down May 31. Schafer and Delbruck had opposed the Fortum merger since its beginning and hence offered their resignations.

Schierenbeck, who graduated in electrical engineering, has held a wide variety of leadership roles in Germany and abroad during his nearly 30-year career, including at Siemens and ThyssenKrupp. In addition, his most recent role as CEO of Thyssenkrupp Elevators, a successful and the most profitable segment of ThyssenKrupp, gives him extensive expertise in designing solutions for industrial customers and in digitalisation.

Sascha Bibert, who has a masters degree in business administration and is a certified financial analyst, has worked in a number of banking and financial firms, including Allianz Global Investors and Munich Re, where he oversaw investor and rating agency relations. He joined E.ON about ten years ago, the last five of which were as CFO of Enerjisa, E.ON’s subsidiary in Turkey, which was listed on the stock exchange after a spin-off in 2018.

Uniper chairman Bernhard Reutersberg said Schierenbeck brought broad international experience, an unbiased view from another industry, and outstanding problem-solving skills to Uniper. And he said Bibert had incisive financial expertise and a broad range of experience and was well known in energy and finance circles alike.

However, their predecessors would be missed, he said: “On behalf of my colleagues on the supervisory board, I’d like to thank Klaus Schafer and Christopher Delbruck for the outstanding work they did for Uniper. They... helped lay the solid foundation on which the newly configured management board will continue to build.”
