Unconventional Gas China 2010 - A Review
Unconventional gas is attracting renewed interest due to enhancements in technology and continuing domestic natural gas shortages. China is actively sourcing and producing unconventional gas in order to meet the increasing demand for energy. According to the National Plan, unconventional gas is expected to meet 15 percent of forecasted domestic demand by 2020. In order to achieve the determined target, the government has issued incentives to support technology and equipment innovation.
Held 18-19 November, with support from the People’s Government of Ordos Municipality, Noppen’s Unconventional Gas China 2010 brought together over 80 government officials, industry leaders, solution providers, project developers and experts from China's unconventional gas industries to discuss new governmental support policies and legislation, examine new technologies as well as provide a detailed overview of project developments across China.
The conference was opened with a welcome speech from Shi Wenkui, Deputy Director, Economic Commission of Ordos Municipal Government, who in the afternoon of day one also gave a detailed overview of the city’s resources and future plan for energy development. The presentation was highly informative and disclosed information not yet published. From the Ministry of Land & Resources Dong Daohua, Deputy Director Consulting & Research Center presented on the topic of “Innovation — Strengthen Development and Utilization of Unconventional Gas”. Dong was previously Deputy Minister of Ministry of Land and Resources.
Keynote speaker, Bai Yi, Vice President, China National Petroleum & Chemical Planning Institute, made a presentation on the policy of coal gasification development in China. Her speech included some important government plans which have not yet been publicized and the question and answer session generated a great response from the delegates. Huang Shengchu, President, China Coal Information Institute was Chairman of the conference and also made a speech on the current status and future development of CBM/CMM recovery and utilization in China. His speech gave delegates a broad view of China’s CBM achievements and shortages. Huang’s vast experiences in CBM/CMM contributed to the presentations success.
In addition, other notable speakers included Li Jingming, Chief Geologist, PetroChina Coalbed Methane Company Limited who presented on China’s CBM exploration technology. Li is one of the most senior experts in CBM exploration, his presentation about the technology was received well by the delegates. Li Xuefei, Manager for Department of External Corporation (New Energy), PetroChina Huabei Oilfield Company, shared a case study on their Qinshui Basin Coalbed Methane Project. It was a practical presentation and received a very positive reaction from the delegates. They felt it was really helpful to combine the laboratory work with real experiences. From the Research Institute of Petroleum Exploration and Development, Sinopec, Bao Shujing, Deputy Manager of Supporting Department, spoke about shale gas development. A very good speaker, the topic was clearly presented with in-depth knowledge and use of case studies.
Up-to-date technology information was introduced by Atlas Copco, world leader in the manufacture and support of drills used in the mining and civil industries. Sales Managers, Hai Kuan Zhang and Bolin Li introduced their CBM drilling solutions and stated they hope Atlas Copcos’ technology will facilitate China’s unconventional gas development. Cong Wei, Vice-director of Land Operation, China Transport Telecommunications & Information Center introduced their satellite communications system and its application in the energy industry.
Other topics discussed included asset management solutions for efficient unconventional gas exploration and management systems by Infor China, CO2-sequestration in CBM exploration by China United Coalbed Methane Corporation, from CNOOC New Energy Investment Co., Ltd a review of efficient and clean technology for coal gasification and a comparative analysis of CBM in China and other Asian jurisdictions by Herbert Smith LLP. Also on day one afternoon Shi Wenkui, Economic Commission of Ordos Municipal Government hosted a dinner that was attended by several senior officials, key delegates and speakers.
