Ukraine Increased Imports of Gas from Poland in May by 26.5%

Ukraine imported 129 million cubic meters of natural gas from Poland in May, with a 26.5% monthly increase.

Ukraine imports natural gas from Germany’s RWE through Poland, Hungary and Slovakia. The country is also seeking to receive gas supplies via Romania

Kiev is buying natural gas on the European markets to reduce its reliance on Russian supplies.

Earlier this year, Russian ambassador to Ukraine Mikhail Zurabov said that Russia would commit to transport at least 60 billion cubic meters (Bcm) of gas through the Ukrainin transport system if a bilateral gas transport consortium is created with Ukraine. BBC Ukraine Service reported the commitment was made with the condition that the European Union would not have a role in the consortium.

Ukraine is also paving the way to unconventional gas projects.

“Shale and tight gas production will result in a production increase. By the mid 2020s Ukraine could become a net exporter of gas,” declared in May Volodymyr Ignashchenko, adviser to the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine.
