UK Lords to Probe Offshore Wind Power

The environment sub-committee of the UK the upper house of parliament, House of Lords, will explore the current state of the North Sea's ecology and what risks it faces from new offshore wind projects March 17 from 10.00 am. It will be broadcast live on parliament tv.

Offshore wind is one of the linch-pins of the 2050 net zero carbon strategy and the country has a number of projects, floating or seabed-based, operational or approved.

The committee, chaired by life peer Robin Teverson, will ask experts about potential ecological impacts of offshore wind development in the North Sea and what more the government could do to minimise them.

The sub-committee will hear from representatives of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds; a professor of ocean and society; and the Marine Management Organisation. It will consider the ecological impacts of offshore wind; the availability and use of technological mitigations; and international co-operation.
