UK Centrica awards BV Rough field contract

UK utility Centrica Storage (CSL) has awarded Bureau Veritas (BV) a three-year contract for independent verification services at its Rough facility, they said August 19. Rough, once the biggest storage facility in Europe with 3.3bn m³ and built to manage winter peak demand, comprises operational and cold-stacked assets.

BV secured the contract with CSL after presenting a novel, tailored and competitively priced solution for the verification of assets that are at different stages in their lifecycle, it said. BV will deliver a "centralised live overview" of the field from an environmental and safety perspective.

The field is now producing the remainder of the cushion gas. CSL was set up as a ringfenced company within Centrica after the market was liberalised, to prevent the biggest company in the domestic gas supply business from benefiting from favourable storage terms or accessing commercially useful information. Its future is undecided although it could be used to store other gases.

CSL said BV was "prompt in becoming proficient in the use of our reporting systems and has provided valuable training in the use and understanding of the BV Compliance system to key stakeholders within CSL. Communication has been timely, open and honest, resulting in quality feedback being provided and received. CSL looks forward to fulfilling our continuous improvement prospects with BV in the near future.”
