Turkey Seeking More Iranian Gas

The National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) will increase its supply of gas to Turkey following a request to the company for greater das supply.

At a conference on renewable energy technologies, managing director of NIGC Javad Owji said that Turkey had sought to increase its daily import by 4 to 5 million cubic metres a day. This is in addition to the 30 million cubic metres already supplied to Turkey every day from Iran.

The increase in supply follows a complete stoppage of the supply of Iranian gas to Turkey in the past fortnight due to an explosion on a gas pipeline at the end of June. This explosion, which was believed to have been caused by terrorist group PKK, stopped supply of gas from Iran to Turkey for five days.

Gas supply through the pipeline resumed on Monday last.

Mr. Owji said that the company had also received a request from Pakistan to up its imports by 7 million cubic metres a day, up from 23 million cubic metres to 30 million cubic metres. The increase in supply to both countries was made possible by a greater focus on gas production, he said, with a plan to increase Iran's gas production by 1.5 by the end of 2013.
