Turkey Deploys 2nd Floating LNG Terminal

Turkey has begun operations at its second floating LNG import unit (or FSRU), Energy Minister Berat Albayrak announced late February 7, according to a Turkish newspaper February 8.

The MOL FSRU Challenger has capacity to send out 20mn m3 per day of gas into the Turkish gas grid, he said. The FSRU docked at a port in the Dortyol district of the Mediterranean province of Hatay, the newspaper Hurriyet reported.

The vessel, the world's largest FSRU (Floating Storage Regasification Unit) with storage capacity for 263,000 m3 LNG, was delivered to its owners Mitsui OSK Lines in September 2017 by South Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME). It is on lease by Mitsui OSK Lines (or MOL) to Turkish state gas grid operator Botas.

This is Turkey's fourth LNG terminal, of which two are land-based, and now two are FSRUs. Turkey's first FSRU project – and third LNG import terminal – launched in late 2016.  Botas operates the older land-based terminal and now also this newer FSRU.
