TransCanada Commissions Sundre Crossover Project

TransCanada said April 9 it has placed into service its 228mn ft3/day Sundre Crossover Project in central Alberta, increasing the capacity of its Nova Gas Transmission Limited (NGTL) subsidiary to move gas from the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin (WCSB) to markets in the US Pacific Northwest and California.

The C$100mn ($78.7mn) project, part of TransCanada’s $7.2bn commitment of near-term capital to the NGTL system, involved the construction of about 21 km of 42-inch pipe east of the town of Sundre, northwest of Calgary.

“The completion of Sundre Crossover is an important development for TransCanada as we continue to expand our system to help our customers connect their resources to the markets where natural gas is needed,” said Tracy Robinson, TransCanada’s senior vice-president and general manager, Canadian gas pipelines. “We continue to focus on connecting WCSB supply to higher value markets, as demonstrated through recent, successful open seasons for incremental export capacity.”

In March, TransCanada announced the completion of a second binding open season for expansion capacity at the Empress/McNeill export delivery point on the NGTL system, which serves markets in eastern Canada and the US. NGTL offered 280mn ft3/day of firm service, targeted to commence in November 2021, after a January open season for 1bn ft3/day of expansion capacity at Empress was over-subscribed.

Expansion facilities to underpin the latest open season volumes carry an expected capital cost of $120mn, over and above the existing $7.2bn NGTL expansion program.
