TotalEnergies starts production at Azeri gas field

France’s TotalEnergies, in partnership with Socar, Azerbaijan’s state energy company, has commenced production from the first phase of development in the Absheron gas and condensate field located in the Caspian Sea, the French firm announced on July 10.

The initial phase involves connecting a subsea production well to a newly constructed gas processing platform, which is in turn linked to Socar's existing facilities in Oil Rocks. This phase has a production capacity of 4mn m3/day of gas and 12,000 barrels/day of condensate. The gas will be sold in Azerbaijan's domestic market.

TotalEnergies and Socar each hold a 50% interest in the project, which is operated by the Joint Operating Company of Absheron Petroleum.

Azerbaijan is looking to increase the number of countries it delivers gas to from six to 10, as part of a push to expand its market share in Europe, replacing lost Russian supply, Azeri president Ilham Aliyec said in April.
