TotalEnergies playing a role in clean maritime shipping

French company TotalEnergies and Columbia Shipmanagement said October 27 they would work together to usher in a “green revolution” for the shipping industry.

A memorandum of understanding outlines ways to collaborate on the energy transition in the maritime shipping industry.

“This partnership is fully in line with our objective to reduce our carbon emissions and to support our customers on the same path by offering and developing with them innovative solutions,” said Philippe Charleux, the senior vice president for lubricants and specialty marketing at TotalEnergies.

The French major is on the energy transition pathway, following in the footsteps of other companies that have rebranded to better reflect their focus on a cleaner future. The maritime shipping industry, for its part, is obligated to lower its emissions by installing exhaust cleaning systems known as scrubbers or by using low-carbon fuels such as LNG.

The duo said they were committed to working together on innovative technologies related to carbon abatement.

“They will also designate existing resources towards development into alternative propulsion systems and marine fuel systems as well as environmentally friendly waste management services,” they said.
