TMC to supply ALS compressors for Korean LNGCs

Norway's TMC Compressors said on June 10 it had been selected by South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) to deliver marine air lubrication system (ALS) compressors for five LNG carriers (LNGCs).

Two of the 174,000-m3 LNGCs will be delivered to Norway's Knutsen, two to South Korea's SM KLCSM and one for another unidentified shipowner. TMC will deliver 15 ALS compressors in total, along with control systems. They will be manufactured in Norway and then delivered to South Korea.

ALS reduces resistance between a ship's hull and the water with the use of air bubbles. TMC's ALS compressors will be coupled with HHI's self-developed Hi ALS model, which the shipbuilder estimates can cut fuel consumption by up to 8%. The Norwegian company's contract covers options for the supply of ALS compressors for other LNGC newbuilds.

The latest award comes after TMC secured a contract from HHI to deliver ALS compressors for seven LNGCs ordered by Capital Gas in January 2020.
