In an article in the Wall Street Journal titled "The Natural Gas Revolution", John Deutch, a professor at MIT and former under secretary of the US Department of Energy, writes that the intense focus on the BP Deepwater Horizon spill, may impact upon positive developments in the energy sector.

Deutch expresses the concern that the severity of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico may turn the global public against oil and natural gas exploration.

In particular, what is at danger of being lost in all of the negativity is natural gas's transition from a dwindling to an abundant resource and in particular, the discovery of vast unconventional resources such as shales.
