TAP Begins Italian Surveying

The Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) continues to move ahead, with the commencement of seabed surveying near San Foca, Lecce in Italy. The initial survey is expected to be completed by the middle of February if favourable weather conditions persist.

During the survey, the consortium will collect soil samples from the Adriatic seabed in order to refine the route that the pipeline will take in Italy. A jack-up platform will conduct a geological soil investigation as part of the survey to a maximum depth of 20 metres below the seafloor. The samples will then be analysed at the platform and again at an onshore laboratory.

A barge will then replace the platform, around the middle of February, which will complete the scientific investigation.

Paul Pasteris, TAP's Country Manager for Italy, said that the surveying will not cause any environmental damage.

"I would like to assure the local residents that this marine survey is being carried out according to the highest international standards on environment and safety and it will not cause any damage to the territory and the environment," he said.

"TAP has applied and received permits for this work both from: the Municipality of Melendugno and from the Port Authority of Otranto. TAP appreciates the cooperation of the community which will provide logistical support to the team performing the investigation."

The Trans-Adriatic Pipeline will complete its route in Italy. It will first pass through Greece, Albania and the Caspian Sea.
