Talos wins bid for US offshore carbon storage facility

US-based Talos Energy said August 25 it was part of a partnership that was the sole winning bidder for an offshore carbon sequestration facility in the Texas waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Talos and project partner Carbonvert said the bid was for a carbon storage site near Beaumont and Port Arthur. Twelve other bidders submitted proposals to the Texas government for the project.

“The project site encompasses a total land area of over 40,000 gross acres and is located offshore in Texas state waters in the Gulf of Mexico,” Talos said.

The company estimates the regional saline reservoirs and other geological properties could support the total sequestration of between 225mn and 275mn metric tons of CO2 from industrial emitters in the area.

Talos said the site selected for the project is entirely within its existing seismic database. The partners next will negotiate a lease agreement with Texas authorities.

Talos will serve as the operator of the project, provided it moves through the necessary steps for final approval.
