Sunbird Gets More CBM Exploration Rights in South Africa

Sunbird Energy has been granted an exploration right over 747.51 km2 in the Springbok Flats project area by South Africa’s Petroleum regulator the Petroleum Agency of South Africa (PASA).

The prospective acreage is considered favourable for the occurrence of CBM due to the presence of extensive coal deposits at depths suitable for CBM development and preservation, the company said.

Based on an independent expert report, the project - including the newly awarded Exploration Right - contains a combined Best Estimate GIP of O.62 Tcf, up to a High Estimate of 1.73 Tcf.

In March 2012 Sunbird applied for additional exploration acreage covering 1,423 km2 contiguous with its existing Springbok Flats licenses. Once granted, the combined Springbok Flats permits will cover 2,621 km2 held by Sunbird (74%) and Umbono (26%).
