Sudan Looks to Develop Domestic Gas Resources

Sudan is looking to develop local natural gas resources with foreign collaboration as well as to import gas for power generation, President Omar al-Bashir said on Sunday, reported Reuters.

The African nation has proven gas reserves of 3 trillion cubic feet but lack of infrastructure like pipeline has led to lack of development of resources.

Bashir said the government had established a state-owned gas company to facilitate gas imports and would build a gas pipeline from Port Sudan on the Red Sea to the capital, Reuters added.

"We will work to increase the production of gas inside Sudan and ... to open the doors to investment," he said, adding that the constitution was being amended to specify the authority responsible for facilitating foreign investment.

Early last month Reuters reported that Sudan was in talks to buy LNG from Qatar.
