MADRID, March 30 (Reuters) - Natural gas storage levels in Spain were at a record 78% of capacity at the end of the winter, national gas grid operator Enagas' Chief Executive Arturo Gonzalo Aizpiri said on Thursday.

Spanish gas exports to France through the interconnection between the neighbouring countries also reached record levels last year, he added at the group's annual shareholder meeting.

As Spain is gearing up to become a large producer and exporter of green hydrogen, Aizpiri also said that transporting hydrogen gas through pipelines would be between two and four times cheaper than transmitting electricity to convert hydrogen at the endpoint.

"2023 will be the year of hydrogen," the CEO said. (Reporting by Pietro Lombardi, writing by Inti Landauro and David Latona, editing by Andrei Khalip)
