South Korea, Uzbekistan Agree to Work Together in Natural Gas Sector

South Korea and Uzbekistan have agreed to push for new joint projects in gas development.

The agreement came during summit talks between South Korean President Park Geun-hye and her Uzbek counterpart Islam Karimov on Tuesday, reports Yonhap News Agency.

Currently, a consortium involving Russian and Uzbek companies is carrying out a $4 billion gas development project which centers on developing the Kandym gas field in the Bukhara region of central Uzbekistan and on building a gas processing plant.

The Kandym field is estimated to hold 150-180 billion cubic meters of gas, 8 billion cubic meters of which is expected to be processed annually through the project, Yonhap News Agency quotes officials as saying.

During the summit talks, Park and Karimov also exchanged views on development of the Surgil gas field near the Aral Sea and construction of a gas-chemical plant.
