South Africa Must Pursue Shale Drilling, Says Zuma

South African President South Africa Jacob Zuma believes the country must pursue the potential for shale-gas drilling in the Karoo region because it may transform the country’s economy, according to new agency Bloomberg.

He said that decision to allow shale gas exploration in the region is expected early next year, reports Bloomberg.

In October, South Africa approved regulations on shale gas exploration and exploitation.

“The proposed regulations prescribe good international petroleum industry practices and standards, which enhance safe exploration and production of all petroleum - including, but not limited to, shale gas, and will further ensure that petroleum exploration is conducted in a socially and environmentally balanced manner,” Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu had said in October.

Zuma also said that companies should “care for the environment” as they look for viable shale-gas reserves, adds Bloomberg.
