Dave Lesar, chief executive of energy services giant Halliburton, sought to ease environmentalists’ fears about the chemicals used in producing oil and gas from shale by demonstrating that they were consumable.

But in a move that hardly inspires confidence, Mr Lesar did not consume the fracking fluids himself, but called up a fellow employee to do the honours.
