Sinopec starts work on CCUS project in Jiangsu

Sinopec has begun developing a carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) demonstration project in Jiangsu, the company said on July 7 in a statement.

Three subsidiaries of state-owned Sinopec - Jiangsu Oilfield Co, Jinling Petrochemical and Nanjing Refinery - have signed an agreement relating to the project.

Under the deal, Nanjing Refinery will build a new 100,000 metric ton/year CO2 capture and utilisation device and related facilities, Jinling Petrochemical will be responsible for providing high-concentration CO2 feedstocks and Jiangsu Oilfield Co will handle the research and application of CO2 flooding technology, and cooperation between upstream and downstream enterprises.

Jiangsu Oilfield Co is involved in oil exploration and development, production, processing and marketing.  It is based in Yangzhou in Jiangsu province and has 23 subsidiaries. Its area of operation includes 15 counties and cities in Jiangsu and Anhui provinces.

Sinopec said the CCUS projects will help China achieve the goal of carbon peak and carbon neutrality. Earlier this month the company broke ground on what it said would be China's first large-scale CCUS project in the country's east, which will take CO2 from a refinery and use it to boost recovery at an oilfield.
