Singapore to Develop Second LNG Terminal

Singapore is looking to build a second LNG terminal, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said at the official opening of Singapore’s first Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal on Tuesday, reports Business Times newspaper.

The S$1.7 billion terminal, which commenced operations on 7 May 2013, is owned and operated by Singapore LNG Corporation Pte Ltd (SLNG). The terminal began operations with two storage tanks and an initial throughput capacity of 3.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa). The third tank and additional regasification facilities have been completed and are now operational, increasing the throughput capacity of the terminal to 6 Mtpa.

The secondary jetty is expected to be completed by the end of March 2014, according to a statement by SLNG.

The Prime Minister said that a second terminal is required due to land constraints at SLNG's present Jurong Island facility. It will limit its expansion potential to just seven tanks with a maximum 15 million tonnes per annum capacity, Business Times quoted him as saying.

He said that there are few potential sites in eastern Singapore for the location of the terminal.
