Shell to Finish Philippines LNG Terminal Feasibility Study Next Year

Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp. is expecting to complete the feasibility study for its planned liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal within the second quarter of next year.

The company is planning to source LNG from number of sources. “We have several sources in Australia, Qatar, the Middle East and Shell is also involved in a gas export facility project in Canada,” Edgar Chua, country chairman of Shell companies in the Philippines, told reporters at the sidelines of the Third Philippine Energy Efficiency Forum.

Chua said they remain optimistic to deliver first gas through the import facility by 2016, the report in Business Mirror said.

Shell is also looking at the Batangas-to-Manila (BatMan-1) natural gas pipeline the government plans to put up for the LNG project. “We’re open to providing technical support, providing assistance in operations and maintenance, and even equity participation, if required,” he said.

Chua said the BatMan-1 natural gas pipeline is important as it broadens the customer-base for LNG,” he added.

The planned import facility is expected to be built ahead of BatMan-1. “Even without the pipeline, we’re looking at a few markets that include [enterprise customers],” he said.
