Shale Gas Usage in Turkey Not Before 2020

Turkey would not be able to exploit and extract its shale gas reserves before 2020, Energy Minister Taner Yıldız said Monday.

Yıldız noted that data from the International Energy Agency (IEA) also suggest that shale gas in the country cannot be used before 2020 as it would take between three to 15 years to study the feasibility of such a project while attracting international investments, Today’s Zaman reported.

However, Yıldız stated that the ministry will send a committee to the US and Canada in July to research and examine the practices used by these countries to extract the gas in a way that also protects the environment, the newspaper reported.

“The committee will look into the shale gas technology used in these counties. The experience of the committee will shed light on future gas practices in the country,” he said.
