Santos Gets Approval for NSW CSG Project

Santos has received final approval from the Commonwealth for its coal seam gas exploration and appraisal program near Narrabri in New South Wales.

In late June, Santos submitted the program to the Commonwealth, as a referral under the EPBC Act, to determine whether the exploration was deemed likely to have a significant impact on the environment, or more specifically be of a scale to activate the ‘water trigger’, under new amendments to the Act.

“We acknowledge the Commonwealth’s robust assessment process and the strict conditions they have imposed to ensure the impact is not significant. The decision is a clear indication that the regulator does not see the referred work program as a having a significant environmental impact,” the company said in a statement.
