Rising Energy Prices Unless Integrated European Market, Says Polish MEP Buzek

A full and well-completed energy market is the only option to avoid rising energy prices in Europe, said Jerzy Buzek, a Polish member of the European Parliament.

“An internal energy market … gives security of electricity and gas supply to our houses and our business. On the other hand, it gives the possibility to achieve affordable lower energy prices,” said Buzek, former President of the European Parliament.

He also claimed that shale gas is an important resource, given the present conditions of the energy market.

“If we could achieve cheaper energy and lower prices using any other primary energy resource, it would be possible to leave the idea of shale gas. Now we should think about drilling and extracting shale gas with all the environmental protection rules in mind,” said Buzek, author of a recent report to make the EU’s internal energy market function better.

Buzek, Prime Minister of Poland from 1997 to 2001, underlined also the importance of developing renewables and fostering energy efficiency.
